"Frico" debate

The "frico" debate has become the argument of the day in our country since Gerard Depardieu has decided to serve it at his famous restourant in Paris.

Gerard is famous here because he visited our country different times and seems he is going to buy a vineyard.

The "frico" is a famous cheese plate ... very popular. It can be cooked in different ways

as mixture with potatoes (normally we use not seasoned cheese) or just cheese .. it can be thin or thick, it can be served with other ingredients .. it's delicious.

Frico and potatoes ..

Frico with potatoes

10 ounces (250 g) fresh or moderately aged Montasio cheese, thinly sliced
A scant pound (400 g) potatoes, peeled and cut in matchsticks.
1/4 cup unsalted butter or olive oil

Heat the fat in a skillet and sauté the potatoes for a few minutes, or until they begin to soften and brown, then add the cheese and continue cooking, shaking the pan every now and then so the cheese gets to the bottom of the potato mixture; once the bottom of the mixture has begun to brown carefully slide it out onto a plate using a spatula (you don't want to break the frico), then invert the frico back into the pan so you end up with the browned side up (as you would if you were flipping a frittata). Continue cooking the frico for a few minutes more, until the underside is also brown; it should have a crunchy skin and a soft inside. The total cooking time of the cheese will be about 12-15 minutes. Serve it with polenta on the side.

Carnival in my village

Every year during febraury we celebrate a traditional carnival in my village. I am pleased to show some pictures.

it's a couple of weeks of holiday, that ends with a carnival parade.

we cook traditional foods, and as you can see we have a lot of fun ..

Fireplace Culture

In our culture in the recent past fireplace was the heart of the family life.

It was considered the only hot place in the house where tired men and women used to sit at night to warm and rest with chatting sprightly young boys and girls all around them.

In the cold winter the elderly men used to tell fables to young children.

Young girls used to predict the future and fate watching at fire sparks.

Old women used to tell stories of their childhood to young girls.

Harmony was all over ... Tv was so far from their culture and no one could predict Tv would break this simple harmony forever.

Skiing on Lussari

I had fun last 29 of december with Luca and Andrea (my sons), we went to ski on Lussari mountain (near Austria Border ).

It was a perfect sunny day. The ski trail was fine (just a little bit frozen) , the ski trail is about 8 Km, starting from the top (you can see below) it's just a unique trail very well managed.
It is also possible to ski by night (Tuesday, Friday 8-10 PM) , the last part of the ski trail is enlightened. During the last winter season they had almost 6 mt deep snow.
On february 2009 it had taken the female world cup. Lussari is closed to Tarvisio and is connected to it by a ski - trail.

It is also a good place to visit during summer.

Telethon at Udine

Telethon race in Udine

Starting from friday 5 o' clock in the evening for 24 hours we had in Udine the annual Telethon race to collect money to be used for research in genetic diseases.

Speaking about the race .. people coming from different teams (firms, banks, schools ad so on ) run for an hour for 24 hours in the urban streets. Enrolment money is donated to telethon.

This event is part of the national telethon days that occours in this days too.

This is a worthy cause to treat diseases that otherwise will not have attention since they affect a restricted population in the world.

In the recent past different genetic diseases have been successfully treated saving life of many people.

First Snow

Since my experience at Leeds Met University i like sometimes to take my camera with me and make photos or video clips of the environment or particular events of my life.
Two days ago, thanks to a wonderful sunny day (after many days of cold rain) i took the opportunity to get some photos and video clips to the mountains chain that surrounds my village on the north side.
It had snow a lot the last days as you can see.
Mountains are more or less 50 km far from my village and the highest you can see at the beginning of the video clip is about 2000 mt high ... it's called "Chiampon" it is followed by a chain of mountains called "Musi", at the end of this chain you can see the highest mountain in the east alpes (Giulie) closed to the Slovenia border that is called Canin (2587 mt).
In the video clip you can also see two small castles (Villalta and Moruzzo castles built in 11 and 13 century) with a mix of photos i took during last weeek.
Sorry but the video clip is quite wavy because i had to use an high zoom factor keeping the camera in my hand.

Today opening Etherpad i had a surprise ! Google announced that the etherpad service will be defenetely closed on march 2010 !.
It was one of the programs we learned in Leeds Met-University !
It's a pity i find it very useful.

Two "Camarin" favourite plates

We have been today at Moruzzo for lunch with some friends (Dino Anita). We enjoy having a nice meal at "Camarin" restourant, a typical Friuli kitchen.

The first plate is a typical Friuli plate is called "broade e muset" (sounds like turnip and pork ) despite the aspect it has a good taste.

The second plate is a typical boiled mix (pork and beef with vegetables), good taste.

A long Weekend ..

It has been a "long weekend for my stomach" i had a dinner last saturday with a group of school friends. We celebrate the 35 year of our sec. school degree. It's a long time !
It's funny to see we are still "the same" despite our "white hair" i mean we still have something to tell each other

or to recall from our school or life experiences, so it was a pleasant time to spend.
The restourant was adapted from an old hist. building.

So nice place nice meal people.

Taking a walk in my country

Sunday afternoon ..me and my wife and of course Jack are walking in the country nearby small hills that sorrounds our village . A cloudy cold weather accompanies us in the muddy country.
Yellow and red leaves trees lie on the ground.

A thin fog hides the hills, and a thin rain is still falling down.
Jack runs as usual smelling everywhere sometimes taking a glance at us.
A sad story
Today we have been informed that the Marco's cat was lost this week in a unfortunate circumstance.
Marco a dear friend of us was in the veterinary ambulatory , while he was managing to come back at home, after the medical examination, the cat ( a female 10 years old) run away from the cage, probably because scared.
There was no way for Marco to catch the cat, "Tea" was definitely lost.
But this is a drama inside another little drama ... Marco had two cats his elder cat ( a male 15 years dead a week ago ) so he and his wife are very sad now ... it's a sad story .

A Worderful 2009 Carnival in Venice !

Hi Leeds "workshop people" ! I am happy to share with you this little sample of 2009 Venice Carnival.
Every year thousands of people come to Venice for the carnival and have fun wearing fantastic costumes. Costumes are tipically inspired at historical masks as the "doge" for example or at 17 Century ladies or noble people.
There are groups of people or individuals coming from all over europe (but not only) .
It is a great moment for Venice. A sort of hystorical event that recall the great "serenissima" as she was known in 17 century. The most important events take place in S. Marco square where all masks have a parade, the best mask or group of masks of course receives an award. You have to take a visit to the city where often you can see craftman working in their small lab at fantastic glass creations. You can also see hundreds of monuments, magnificent churches and art museums. You can enjoy having a trip around the city with "gondola" a typical Venice boat.

Wednesday evening back at my duties

I try to say to myself "well just a few days had passed" since Leeds experience and nobody seems to work with their blogs except me and Christoph.
Actually i have to think about my blog i mean the it's final use it could be a sort of my light thoughts or my diary or ?
I would like to keep in touch with those i met in Leeds with which i had fun and interesting conversations last week.
I appreciated the way David is managing his blogs, a sort of journalism blog with the most important events report. The events that interest our experience are very well managed as you can see here .

May be that the other "blogging people" of our course is busy at the moment or still tired but i do hope that they will continue their "blogging experience".

Experiencing Leeds,Bradford culture was a nice surprise for me.

I have got a feeling visiting Leeds, Bradford as "young multicultural cities grown up around their fascinating history.
About our group ( a little portion of Europe: Spain, Turkey, Latvia, Italy, England, Germany, Bulgaria) .. We were a great example of a well integrated society.
We did a very good job together without prejudices.
I do hope this experience could be an example and a starting point for the future even for the young generation.

HI Folks !

A wonderful experience yesterday exploring different cultural aspects of people living in Bradford !

Bradford is a multicultural industrial city.

There lives a large well integrated Asiatic community (as you can see from the picture on the left side).

The city had a great industrial past ! (Iron mills, Wool Factory )

You will find the first mill built in the world !

But somebody of us had also a fun at Media National Museum

Just a little bit of Bradford History !

Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Bradford rose to prominence during the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture, particularly wool.

It was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and amongst the earliest industrialised settlements, rapidly becoming the "wool capital of the world".[8]

The area's access to a supply of coal, iron ore and soft water facilitated the growth of Bradford's manufacturing base, which, as textile manufacture grew, led to an explosion in population and was a stimulus to civic investment; Bradford has fine Victorian architecture including the grand Italianate City Hall.

Bonfire on 5 November!

Is an annual celebration on the evening of 5 November.
It marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London.
Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries,[1][2] belonged to a group of Roman Catholic restorationists from England who planned the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
Their aim was to displace Protestant rule by blowing up the Houses of Parliament while King James I and the entire Protestant, and even most of the Catholic, aristocracy and nobility were inside. The conspirators saw this as a necessary reaction to the systematic discrimination against English Catholics.
The Gunpowder Plot was led by Robert Catesby, but Fawkes was put in charge of its execution. He was arrested a few hours before the planned explosion, during a search of the cellars underneath Parliament in the early hours of 5 November prompted by the receipt of an anonymous warning letter.
